Gale Storm-Nor'easter

2-1-98 to 2-4-98

On a Sunday, Febuary 1st, a low moved off the Texas coast into the Gulf of Mexico. The local forecasters predicted that it would merge with another low right over head of us (Northeast Florida) and that we would get heavy rain and possible flooding. All day, it moved toward the Northeast toward Florida. By 1800 EST a flood watch was issued for All of Florida from Key West to Pensacola. We were in for a big event.

On Monday the pressure started at 30.00" and began slowing falling through out the day. By Tuesday Morning at 600 EST/1100z the pressure was at 29.34"/993.5mb and it was windy with winds gusting up to 15-20 mph. Below are 3 graphs showing the pressure falling. Over night I had received 1.34" of rain. All day Tuesday, it looked as though it was going to rain but it didnt.

When I got home at 1525 EST/2025z, I checked my weather observations on my WX 200 and I had noticed that the barometric pressure had flucated with it going up to 29.37" during the day but by 1525 EST it had come back down to 29.34"/993.5mb. I turned on my DSS and put it on the Weather Channel for the lastest info. I looked at the radar and I had noticed that the radar that the Gale Low had moved on shore in Panama City, FL, so Northeast Florida was spaired the heaviest rain. At about 1930 EST/0030 z, I check the observations again and the pressure had gone down to 29.31"/992.5mb. The Gale was moving toward the East toward my location in Northeast Florida.

Wednesday Morning, I checked the observations, about 0200 EST/0700z the barometric pressure bottomed out at 29.25"/990.5 mb. The pressure now at 0600 EST/1100z was 29.37" and holding steady. Over night the gale had passed to my NE and was heading out to sea. I got 0.28" of rain over night. Wednesday was a cold, raw day, with the wind gusting from 10-25 mph all-day. The wind chill flucated from 40F to 30F. In the morning the temperature was about 65F. Bye the time I got home from school the temp. was about 45F. The temp. dropped like a rock through out the day. At 1530 EST/1930z The barometric pressure was 29.57" and rising slowly. During the day no rainfall was recorded.
