Two Lows

2-15-1998 to 2-17-1998

On Friday, Feburary 13th a Low Pressure Area moved into Southern California, dived south over Northern Mexico. By Sunday Feburary 14th it had emerged into the SW Gulf of Mexico and was moving NE toward North-Central Gulf States of Mississippi, Alabama and Western Florida. This was a the beginning of a rainy 3 days. The low became a Gale Low it moved NE. The Barometer went down to 29.93"/1013.5 mb. In Northeast Florida my weather station recorded 0.90" of rainfall.

On Monday, Feburary 15th, the Low Pressure passed way to the Northwest of my location the leading edges brought heavy rain through the morning. At various times (since my WX 200 weather station can give in/hr{rainfall rate}) the rainfall rate was at 4.70 in/hr several times. It came down hard for about 1 hr from 1000 to 1100. After 1100 the rain slacked off to light rain. By 1300 the rain stopped. My weather station recorded 3.70".

Early Monday, another Low Pressure area formed in SE Texas and raced across the Gulf of Mexico. By 1700 the Leading edge of the Low was in Tallahassee(FL) NEXRAD Doppler Radar. At 1500 A Flood Watch was issused for All of North Florida including Baker County, the county I live in. On the 1800 Weather Forecast, I noticed that on the IR Satillite Picture that the Red gave way to Deep Red meaning that the Thunderstorms where getting very strong. So at 1800 a Tornado Watch was issued until 1200/17th Feb.(I think). At about 2100 it began to rain. At this time the pressure was at 29.75"/1007.5 mb and it was still falling. At 2145, It started raining again. It was light rain. The pressure was down to 29.66"/1005.5 mb and still falling.

At 2300 the Tornado Watch was extended till 0600 17th Feb. By 2330 the leading edge of the very heavy rain had reached me. It was lighting alot. At 2332 my NOAA Weather Radio's alarm went off..A Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Northern Baker County in FL and Southern Charlton County in GA. It was almost here. The pressure was near 29.63"/1004.5 mb and it was falling rapidly. By 1200 I went to sleep. By 1230, Tuesday Morning the rain started. The pressure went up to 29.66" and back down to 29.63" in the past half hour. (looking later at the data). I could not sleep. By 0100/17 the rain was coming down very heavy. It was very windy and lighting alot. The pressure bottomed out at 29.57"/1001.5 mb at 0122. Because it was very stormy my dad turned off my computer just before 0130 and thus I didnt have any observations again until 0645.

On Tuesday Morning, Feburary 17th, I woke up at 0620 and I went to get ready for school, I turned on my t.v. and I was told that Macclenny, FL & Baker County was under a State of Emergency. They closed county schools for the day because of the heavy rain. I went back to sleep. I woke up again at about 1030 and I check my date. When it ended I checked the total rainfall for Tuesday Morning..it was 5.75". It flooded everywhere in my county. The 3 day total was: 9.95".

Below are several graphs. 1 showing the pressure fall Monday night/Tuesday Morning and the rainfall.
