2008 has begun cool and wet with an Artic Outbreak early in the month. The avg. temp was 0.6º
below normal and +1.28" surplus for the monthly rainfall & yr but there is still a -0.23"
deficit from last yr. However, the 2006-08 Drought continues into its 23rd month. Through
the first 2 weeks, High Pressure centered off Cape Hatteras dominated the weather with dry
conditions. A cold front passed through on the 12th producing 1.50" of beneficial rain.
A Gulf of Mexico low developed in the Western Gulf on the 16th in combo with High Pressure
over the Carolinas produced rain that continued through the 18th as the system moved through
and the cold front lifted back N as a warm front with another Gulf low on the 19th producing
significant rainfall (>1") during the 3 days. Light rain occurred during the middle to end
of the month as a fast moving front passed on the 22nd-23rd, a 3rd Gulf low developed and moved
through 26th-27th and a fast moving cold front on the 30th.
Through the 29th, the US Drought Monitor has remained the same since the end of Dec. 2007, D0
or Abnormally Dry. The long term drought indicator from the CPC analyzed NE Florida as
D1 - Moderate Drought at the end of the month (27 Jan).
The highest temp. occurred on the 10th @ 77.8°F. The lowest temp was 25.6°F on the 3rd.
The highest peak wind of 26 mph occurred 1st and 2nd in the wake of the Artic Front. All-time
record highest pressure of 30.754"/1041.5 mb associated/w the Artic High behind the Artic Front
occurred on the 3rd.
