The drought of 2006-07 continues into its 14th month/w April being cooler and drier
than normal. It was -1.1º below normal for the avg. temp and -2.56" deficit for the month
and -5.75" deficit for the year. 87% of the rainfall (0.48") occurred on the 15th.
The US Drought Monitor started as D1 - Moderate Drought on 4/3 and continued that way
through the 10th. On 4/17 it increased further to D2 - Severe Drought reached the peak
of the drought in late Dec 2006. It increased to another severity reaching
D3 - Extreme Drought on 4/26 and continuing through 5/1. This is the worse to date in
the ongoing 14th month drought as very little rain was recorded and the temp. continues
to rise. The high approached 90ºF in the first 4 days before cooling off by a weak front
and reforced a few days later by a strong late season cold front dropped the temperature
tying the daily record of 32ºF on the 8th and also setting a new daily low high of 56.2
as well on the 8th. Within 3 days, the temp. quickly rebounded setting a new record high
of 93.3 on the 14th. The next day, 4/15, another front associated with a deep low pressure
in the Mid Atlantic created windy conditions with avg wind speed of 7 and a high
1-min avg of 17 mph with a peak wind of 36 mph. The peak wind exceeded 30+ mph 3 times
that day. This is the first 30+ mph peak gust since June 2006. By the end of the month,
the region became under the influence of the Bermuda High increasing the temp. and
causing very dry conditions with last 6/9 days <=35% Rh.
"ONE OF THE BIGGEST WEATHER STORIES IN APRIL WAS THE LARGEST WILDFIRE IN
GEORGIA HISTORY. DURING THE LAST TWO WEEKS OF THE MONTH SEVERAL WILDFIRES
OCCURRED ACROSS SOUTHEAST GEORGIA...WITH THE LARGEST SOUTH OF WAYCROSS.
OVER 80,000 ACRES WERE BURNED. LARGE PLUMES OF SMOKE AFFECTED MUCH OF THE
REGION FROM NORTH GEORGIA TO CENTRAL FLORIDA. IN JACKSONVILLE VISIBILITY
WAS REDUCED TO LESS THAN A MILE AND THE AIR QUALITY INDEX WAS IN THE
UNHEALTHFUL RANGE ON THE 17TH...18TH...29TH...AND 30TH." (NWS Jacksonville
