The drought of 2006 continues into December entering its 10th month. As of the end of the month,
the US Drought Monitor analazed the drought to remain at D2 or Severe Drought as it has been all
month. This is despite the 3.37" in a 3.87" or 91% of the monthly rainfall occuring around
Christmas with 2 El Nino enhanced storm systems from 12/22-12/25.
The rainfall was +1.20" above average do to that 4 day rain span but remained at -8.98" for the year.
Overall, the month was warmer and wetter than normal. The 7th and 8th, which where the coldest
days of the month, featured a cut-off coastal storm which produced snow in to the north in
S. Carolina the morning of the 7th as well as sleet/ice pellets there that day and rain/snow mix
in Central FL to the south on the night of the 7th and brought down cold air on the W side of
the storm. Overnight of the 7th/morning of the 8th, the radar displayed looked to be snow showers or
sleet/ice pellets over Baker County and the NWS Jacksonville forecaster on duty that early morning
stated based on what he learned in school, he thought it looked like sleet/ice pellets aloft.
I have no way of confirming this, because nobody reported it.
