The drought of 2006 continues into August entering its 6th month. As of the end of the month,
the US Drought Monitor analazed the drought up to D0 or Abnormally dry, a slight
improvement from the previous 3 weeks of D1 or Moderate Drought. The rainfall was -0.3"
below normal for the month but remains -5.04" for the year. As with the previous few
months, most of the rainfall occurred in a few days (2.69" on the 4th & 3.14" on the 25th).
Most of the month was once again influenced by Old & Stationary frontal boundaries
/upper level troughts and not true sea breeze T-storms. Tropical Storm Ernesto affected
the area from the 27th-31st. A marked increase in tropical moisture resulted in 3 days
of 80º+ Dew Pts from 27th to the 29th. A squall/feeder band on the 30th produced a wind
gust to 20 mph and at its closest approach on the 31st a Gust to 20 mph on the backside
of the system. The 2 days prior to Ernesto's arrival, the temps shot up into the
mid 90s (93.9,95.3 on 28th/29th).
